KRABI

The small fishing town, the capital of beautiful Krabi province, has an important role as the ferry embarkation point for islands such as Koh Lanta to the south, Koh Phi Phi to the southwest and the beaches around Ao Nang to the west.  Set on the banks of the Krabi Estuary, the town takes its name from a sword or Krabi, allegedly discovered nearby.  It is surrounded by towering limestone outcrops, similar to thosein Phang Nga, which have become the symbol of Krabi province.

Ao Nang 2kms(1 mile) sandy beach.  Ao Nang is a pleasant base for day trip by longtails boat to the striking Railae Phra Nang headland, located 3 km( 2 miles) to the southeast.  Its sheer limestone cliffs, pure white sand and emerald sea.

Koh Poda, southwest of Phra Nang, where striped tiger fish can be fed by hand from the shallow shore.

Koh Hua Kwan or Chicken Island, located further south.  Both islands offer excellent diving and snorkeling.

Koh Hong 25 km(16 miles) northwest of Ao Nang, the prized nests of the edible-nest swiftlet are collected from the island’s intricate network of caves.

Phi Phi Hat Nopparat Thara National Marine Park, to the west of Ao nang, over look stunning beaches.  The park covers an area of 390 sq km (150 sq miles), which includes Koh Phi Phi is in fact two separate islands Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Lay.  The islands are famed for their spectacular landscapes.  Rock climbers are attracted by the breathtaking cliffs, with tall sheer walls of limestone rising to 314 m(1,030 ft) on Phi Phi Don, and 374m(1,230 ft) on Phi Phi Lay.  Nature lovers, meanwhile, find a haven in the islands transparent seas and coral beds, which are home to a wide range of sea life.

Koh Lanta, is a group of 52 islands, 15 of which belong to The Koh Lanta National Marine Park.  The park is home to many animals, including lemurs, langurs, civets, mouse deer and over 100 types of bird.  Most of the wildlife is on the amaller, remoter islands.  The ramshackle wooden port of Ban Sala Dan is the gateway to Koh Lanta Yai, a predominantly Muslim fishing island.  Some 25 km(15 miles)  long, this is the main island in the archipelago.  It is covered with undulating forested hills sweeping down to numerous west-facing sandy bays, and, although it cannot match Koh Phi Phi for scenery, it is a good alternative for those seeking solitude.
