KOH SAMUI

Famous for its white sand beaches, deserted little coves, calm waters, coconut groves and rice paddies.  Samui was first discovered  by backpackers in the early 1970’s.

Located in Gulf of Siam(Thailand), it is 84 Kms.off the coast of Suratthani and about  560 Kms. South of Bangkok.  Samui is the largest in a group of more than 80 tropical isles, many of which are inhabited.  It is also the third largest island in Thailand, covering a total area of 247 square kms.  A mountain ridge runs from east to west and the island is still forest.

PEOPLE AND LIFESTYLE

Official Samui records reflect a local population of around 40,000 inhabitants who are know as “Chao Samui” (Samui Folks) rather than  “Chao Thai”,  indicating their pride in their local culture and ethnic identity.  The residents of Samui are Thais who migrated from the mainland including Muslims from Pattani who are settled in the fishing villages of Hua Thanon and brought with from the  bright colorful boats.  Life in Samui is as easy-going and relaxed as can be and the Samui residents are notably tolerant of even the oddest characteristics.  Shoes should be taken off when entering a private home.  Thais are of cool nature and therefore remain patient even under hard times and visitors who which to get along with the people here should do the same.

A smile for which Thai people are known for, would get you a lot further than a frown, even when you are annoyed.

Koh Pha Ngan, 7 Km ( 4 miles) north of Koh samui and is two-thirds its size.  The island has the same tropical combination of powdery beaches, accessible coral reefs and rugged, forested interior.

Angthong National Marine Park 31 Kms (19  miles) south east of Koh samui, covering an area of 102 sq.km (39 sq miles) are the submerged peaks of a flooded range of limestone mountains.

Koh Tao or Turtle island, located 40 kms (25 miles) northwest of Koh Pha Ngan, is the smallest and prettiest of the islands in the Samui archipelago.

Hin Ta & Hin Yai or Grand Father and Grand Mother rock formations which are famous for their similarity in shape to male and female sexual organs.
